Why January is a great time to make a Will

Published: 14/01/2015

It sounds a little bit morbid, starting the New Year by making a Will, but January really is a good time to get all your affairs in order as Linda Cummins, Head of Wills and Probate, explains:

“January is often regarded as the month when it’s time to get organised, to set the precedent for the year ahead. For many that could be to improve our lifestyle by stopping smoking, eating healthily and doing more exercise; for others it’s a great opportunity to get finances in order, no matter how daunting those post-Christmas bills shape up to be.

Making a Will is an extension of this. It is one of the most crucial parts of your financial planning as it can ensure your loved ones are protected and provided for.”

A feeling of relief

“So many of our clients express a feeling of relief when they finally make their Will, even those who weren’t even sure they needed a Will in the first place! The truth is everyone needs a Will; without one you have no say over who gets what.

“If you don’t think you have anything worth leaving, making a Will can help ensure your loved ones are not left in a difficult situation at a highly emotional time, having to endure a lengthy, and possibly expensive, process to administer your estate.

Making a Will in January means you’re set for the rest of the year! You don’t have that niggling little feeling at the back of your mind so capitalise on this proactive feeling. After all we all know we’ll fall back into our old routines soon enough!”
