The hunt for the missing Will

Published: 12/05/2014

It may not have the same ring to it as The Hunt for Red October but searching for a loved one’s last Will can be equally as dramatic as this action thriller so it may be a good idea to store your Will with your solicitor for safe keeping and inform your family about this.

At Goldsmith Williams, we offer lifetime storage to all our clients making a Will. Not only this, clients taking this service also benefit from:

  • Free minor updates/changes to your Will
  • A copy of your Will when you need it^

There are many times when you may need to update your Will including:

  • Adding an additional beneficiary such as new grandchild
  • Changing address details of existing Beneficiaries and/or Executors
  • Adding or removing simple gift clauses.

Linda Cummins, Head of Wills and Probate at Goldsmith Williams, explains what could happen if a Will can’t be found:

“The last thing a loved one needs at such an emotional time is the added stress of searching for a Will. If they cannot find a Will and go on to administer the estate only to then discover that there was in fact a Will or indeed a later Will in place then they could be personally liable if they have distributed to the wrong beneficiaries. This is a situation I’m sure none of us would wish upon our nearest and dearest.

“Whether you decide to take up our lifetime storage service and the additional benefits that come with it or not, when you make a Will make sure you let your loved ones know where it is stored. You should also let them know every time you update your Will so they know when the latest version was made and where it is kept.”
