What Are The Best Valentine's Day Gift Ideas?

Published: 05/02/2019

With the most romantic day of the year just around the corner, couples across the country will no doubt will flocking to the High Street (or frantically scrolling through Asos or Amazon) for last-minute gifts to impress their loved one/s.

Stuck for what to buy your significant other? Here are a few ideas.

What to buy if you’re not so fussed about Valentine’s Day…

According to statistic portal website Statista.com , couples in the UK generally are quite relaxed when it comes to gifting on February 14. The website’s research suggests that the most popular ways to treat your partner on the special day are:

• Gifting a romantic card (40%)

• Treating your love interest to a nice box of chocolates (17%)

• Taking your partner for a romantic meal out (14%)

• Surprising your other half with a bouquet of fresh flowers (7%).

British couples, according to these 2019 stats, are quite content with sticking to small and traditional gestures of love, it would seem.

How to do Valentine’s Day like an American

Couples in the US too favour understated gift options on Valentines’ Day - according to Statistica, the most common presents on February 14 in the States include candy, chocolate or sweets (44%), a greetings card (33%) or flowers (32%). However, other loved-up recipients said they opt for more extravagant presents to woo their husbands, wives, girlfriend and boyfriends. These respondents might gift:

• Wine (14%)

• Gift cards (13%)

• Jewelry (10%)

• Shoes/clothes (8%)

• Perfume/cologne (8%)

• PJs (7%)

• Event tickets e.g. concert or theatre (6%)

• Romantic trip (5%)

• Cosmetics/beauty products (4%)

• A pet (1%)

It would certainly appear that some Americans are more adventurous when it comes to Saint Valentine than their English counterparts!

Creative Valentine’s Day gift ideas

While chocolates, cards and flowers might be the most popular option come Valentine’s Day across the globe, they aren’t the only ones of course! We came up with a few more creative ideas if you’re really looking to wow that special someone this Feb 14

A ghost tour

Something so spooky might not immediately spring to mind when thinking about romantic gift ideas, but think about it - a candlelit stroll about a beautiful historic part of town, cuddling up to one another as the going gets scary, followed by a nice glass of warming vino, over talks of the tales you’ve just heard. A ghost tour could be the perfect, unusual Valentine’s Day activity for those who prefer something a little different. Some popular ghost tours across the country include:

The Jack The Ripper Tour, London

Shiverpool tours, Liverpool

• The original Manchester ghost walk (there is even a Valentine special this year!)

Bloody Tour of York

Mercat Ghost Tour, Edinburg

Spooky!

The Eden Project, Cornwall

If conservation is more your thing, Cornwall’s The Eden Project is the perfect date spot for more environmentally-minded couples. This visitor destination is nestled in a huge crater, where massive Biomes house the largest rainforest in captivity, stunning plants, exhibitions and stories, along with striking contemporary gardens, summer concerts and year-round events suited to the whole family. It’s really a unique experience. For more information about The Eden Project, visit here.

A day with dinosaurs

For couples who are still children-at-heart (aren’t we all), a visit to Norfolk’s dinosaur adventure park could be a different (and totally fun) way to spend Valentine’s Day this year. Here you’ll get to explore wooden trails on which you’ll discover life-sized dinosaurs. Sounds like the perfect date to us! You could even bring the kids for a nice family day out. Find out more about Roarr! Dinosaur Adventures here.

Chatsworth House, Derbyshire

Could there be anything more Valentine’s Day-appropriate to this historic property in the Peak District, where you can reenact Colin Firth’s famous water fountain scene from the BBC’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice? We think not! For more information about the beautiful Chatsworth House and its opening times, go to their website - note that opening times are currently altered for winter.

Help, I’m broke! How can I pay for a Valentine’s Day treat?

Concerned about your bank balance? It could be a good idea to check whether you have any mis-sold PPI compensation owing to you.

There are now just seven months left to check whether you were ever mis-sold PPI (or payment protection insurance).

PPI was mis-sold to tens of thousands of consumers across the country, when they took out loans, mortgages, credit cards, stores cards and more.

There is absolutely no harm in checking if you were one of them, before the PPI deadline of 29 August 2019. Please note, that as we move closer to August, it will become more and more difficult to make your claim and there could be undue delays in recovering your money, as the system becomes overloaded.

PPI refunds can range from a few hundred pound to thousands - so you could even fund Valentine’s Day for the next few years!

For more information about starting your quick and easy PPI claim today, go to our PPI checker.
