Europe And The UK's Best Christmas Markets

Published: 18/12/2019

We're officially on the countdown to Christmas Day! To get yourself in the festive mood, we've put together a list of some of the best Christmas markets to visit this December and

Innsbruck Christmas Market - Innsbruck, Austria

Nestled beneath snowed-covered mountains, Innsbruck offers one of the most romantic settings for Christmas markets in Austria. There are several markets to choose from, but the Old Town Market is probably the most beautiful. All up, shoppers can enjoy around 70 stalls throughout what is known as Fairy-tale Alley! More information can be found here.

Basler Weihnachtsmarkt - Basel, Switzerland

This gorgeous European market boats over 180 traders and artisans. It’s so huge, it’s spread across three sites: the largest is on Barfüsserplatz in the old town; Münsterplatz, in front of the historic cathedral in one of the most beautiful squares in Basel, and a smaller market on the right bank of the Rhine. Absolute Christmas joy! More information can be found here

Christmas and Epiphany Market at Piazza Navona - Rome, Italy

The Italians just do it better - and Christmas is no exception. What to expect from this huge Roman market? Lots of tasty food (of course!), fairy lights and wooden crib scenes and a huge ancient foundation. That’s not to mention the beautiful artisan stalls, live music and more. Plus, it’s Rome at Christmas time, so what’s not to love! More information can be found here.

Tallinn Christmas Market – Tallinn, Estonia

Think hot chocolate and ginger bread, chalet stalls selling homemade gifts and huge Christmas tree which is actually Europe’s oldest to ever be put on display (it’s been set up in the town hall square since 1441!). Tallinn is perfect if you’re after complete fairy-tale vibes this Christmas. More information can be found here

Aachener Weihnachtsmarkt – Aachen, Germany

If mulled wine and other festive alcoholic beverages are your thing, then look no further than Aachen. This very German Christmas market sees the city’s centre, including quaint squares and alleyways, taken over with traders, bars and lots of other merry happenings. A true gem and off the beaten track! More information can be found here

Edinburgh’s Christmas – Edinburgh, Scotland

Complete with a Christmas tree maze, craft stalls, the Big Wheel and other rides and plenty of yummy food and drink, the Scottish city’s famous festive market is vibrant and fun. Great for the kids! More information can be found here.

Manchester Christmas Market – Manchester, England

Manchester is famous for its HUGE market which is packed to the brim filled with festive cheer including 360 stalls and chalets in 10 sites across the city centre. This is a great option for the grown-ups, given all the local restaurants and bars are equally festive during this time, so you can make a day and night out of your trip to the lively Northern city. Hurrah! More information can be found here

Winter Wonderland, London

What would the festive season be without a trip to this Hyde Park classic? Winter Wonderland is home to the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink, an ice bar, an après ski-inspired ‘village’, loads of festive food stalls, German beer tents and even hireable karaoke huts. Let’s go! More information can be found here

Liverpool’s Christmas Market, St George’s Hall

Of course we had to mention our home city, Liverpool, in this round-up! Liverpool is festive as anything during the winter months and the city’s Christmas market doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Visitors can indulge in mulled wine and festive tipples from the Tipi bar, have a laugh on the karaoke cable cars in the Ski Lodge and browse lovely goods from local artists. Even better, entry is free! More information can be found here
