BT has confirmed its intentions to break into the legal services market after submitting an application to become an alternative business structure.

Motor claims company BT Claims, which has been trading since 2010, is wholly owned by the BT Group. It currently offers a nationwide motor claims management services to 35,000 corporate fleets but is poised to extend its services to other corporates subject to receiving a licence from the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Based in Sheffield, the legal team is headed up by solicitor Miles Jobling who will be responsible for a team of around 20 staff members, the majority of whom are solicitors, for launch.

A spokesperson for BT commented:

“We can confirm that BT Claims has submitted an application to begin the ABS process in order that it can offer its expertise to other corporate, insurance and companies and brokers who share the same values as them and see this as an opportunity to improve their approach to the way in which they manage claims. BT is not looking to enter the consumer claims market.”¹
