Brits spend over £30,000 on conveyancing in their lifetime

Published: 26/09/2012

The average UK resident spends £8,264 in fees each time they move house, according to research from reallymoving.com.

With people moving house, on average, four times in their lifetime, this takes the total cost to £33,056.

Costs include estate agent fees, Stamp Duty Tax and conveyancing charges which, based on the average property value of £228,000, come in at £4104, £2280 and £805 respectively.

Londoners, however, pay 2.5 times the national average due to significantly higher house prices.

Rosemary Rogers is the Director of reallymoving.com:

“Taking a chunk of equity out of your sale to cover the costs of a move is no longer a viable option for many sellers who need to keep hold of their existing equity in order to secure the best possible mortgage rate on their new home. As a result, buyers are more prepared to negotiate hard with estate agents over fees and shop around for the best conveyancing and removal quotes to keep costs as low as possible.”
